Heroes from the Bible that found God’s will by “being still”

Job – 40:3-4, 42:1-6

Elijah at the mountain I Kings 19:8-13

DavidPs. 4:4 — the solution to sinful anger is meditation on the Word of God and being still.

Jesus — our ultimate example

  1.        Would go off by himself to pray – (John 8:1)
  2.        When he wanted to make sure his disciples HEARD him he went somewhere quiet (Mark 6:31-32)
  3.        He wanted them to pray as well (Matt. 26:40)

Lessons on Prayer from our Lord in Luke

Jesus modeled an extraordinary prayer life.  His entire earthly ministry was saturated with frequent, intense communication between Him and his heavenly Father.    (Luke 3:21-22, 4:1-13)

  1. He prayed often – (Luke 5:16)
  2. He prayed in solitary places (5:16, 6:12)
  3. He prayed persistently (long periods of time) (6:12, 22:40-46)
  4. He prayed passionately (22:40-46, 9:28-29)
  5. He meant his prayer life to be an example to his disciples (9:28-29, 10:2, 11:1-4, 11:8-10)
  6. If you would be His disciple then you must be a person of prayer (6:46)

 Living it out

  1. Make it a daily practice
  2. If you are in a bad situation BE STILL before you hit rock-bottom and are “forced” to listen!
  3. Make these 3 things part of your life: Silence, Solitude, Serenity

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things.

(Philippians 4:6-8)

Such a servant a real Christian is: such is a faithful minister, always intent either on the work of his own salvation, or that of his neighbor; speaking more to God than to men; and to these as in the presence of God. The tongue is fitly compared by one to a pump, which empties the heart, but neither fills nor cleanses it. The love of God is a hidden spring, which supplies the heart continually, and never permits it to be dry or unfruitful.
